Brisbane kiteboarding hits talkback radio.

"We can still have incidents where it is experienced kiters having the occasional injury, but that generally comes from complacency"
4BC is one of the oldest radio stations in Australia, starting back in the 1930's and purchased by the ABC later that decade, the talkback radio station is more popular than ever today, now owned by Fairfax Media and sitting where they always have on 1114kHz AM.

Noticing the busy metro beaches of Brighton, Sandgate and Wynnum this week, and the couple of incidents that received media attention during the strong southerlies around New Years, long running presenter Kim Mothershaw decided to find out what's up with the sport of kiteboarding. Or is it Kitesurfing? At least he didn't call it 'Kitesailing'…

Immediately easing his fears was Jason from Briskites, the owner of Brisbanes longest running store, with a string of eloquent and informative responses to the questions that every outsider asks. It's actually a great introduction to the sport and would have done wonders for the sports image with the (ahem) talkback generation.

"On the subject of people who do get into trouble with them (kites), is it mainly inexperience that causes that, or can a really experienced person find themselves in trouble on a kite?" Asks Kim, after learning about how expensive the equipment is, and you don't need to be strong to do it.

"It generally is the inexperienced, or the people that haven't taken the effort to gain the knowledge in the right way. We can still have incidents where it is experienced kiters having the occasional injury, but that generally comes from complacency which can happen in any sport like ours."

Listen to the entire interview here for an interesting insight into how our sport is perceived by the average layperson, and for some great tips for those looking at getting into the sport of kiteboarding.
