I am really starting to wonder if schools are so entrenched on Global Warming , Political Correctness etc. the basics are being swept under the carpet.
Three months ago I went to Maccas for a snack. The bill was $5.40.
I gave the young girl (14 or thereabouts) 2x$2 and 3x50 cents.
She held them out in her palm and looked at me and asked how much was that. I had to tell her $5.50 so she could enter it in the cash register . I was very polite but felt like calling the manager over.
Today I had a similar experience with a young bloke at woollies.
He did not know how to count up the coins to enter in the register.
Talk about a cashless society .

If it is $16.50 and you give them $21.50, I'd have thought its very obvious why. They just can't deal with it

To be fair, for a kid, the first time they get that 'request' they don't understand it. I think a kid thinks very differently about money and wouldn't have done the same themselves.

What an ignorant comment. Read Paul Dillon's research on drug use and you will see drug use amongst teens is going down. You believe all the bull**** media reports designed to get ratings and sell papers.

Great research you have there. Two isolated examples from check out operators you extrapolate out to a whole generation of youth. I think every generation has a dim view of those that follow. Was not like that in my day yada yada.
Go to a school and check the Maths they do now. You might be in for a surprise.

Couldn't give a stuff about the maths I'm talking about the lack of teaching basic skills like counting coins. In respect to giving 21.50 for a 16.50 bill my wife has told me numeral times not to as a lot of young people employed as cashiers just can't understand why you would give 21.50 for a 16.50 bill.

We appear to have no educational subjects loosely defined as "logic".

The closest any actual subjects come to this is mathematics.

The demise of the depth and breath of mathematical teaching is not helping this.

Maybe we should go back to your guys days, when everything was sooo much better, and give the check out kids an abacus. lol
Notes and coins will not exist soon anyway, most people now already just pay wave or tap their phone. Simples Counting coins is a thing of the past. I cant even remember the last time I had old school money in my wallet ?? Not needed anymore.

To be fair, i don't know that they ever taught that in school. It's something you don't learn about till you come across it working a till. And at first, it's not at all logical when you get handed more change than is due.

It is a bit frustrating when they can't perform simple maths like you mentioned in the OP though.

Oh God no ! I'm just saying it's sad and it shows that the basic three R,s are no longer taught.
By the way the Japanese used the abacus . Westerners used mental arithmetic ( do you know what that is) and later the slide rule.

And the dinosaurs used their toes and their extinct, I understand your point, but unfortunately/ fortunately ?? mental arithmetic is not needed as much now, as it use to be, just they way it is now.

After school and at uni , worked casually in bars etc when you mentally had to add up the round ( when we still hand 1 and 2 cents) ask for the cash total and enter that amount in a cash register, that did not give amount tendered change., you had to work it out.

Could not do it now, without practice.

If we did not have "smart" registers, barcoding, and tap and go etc - the young would work it out.

Handling cash isn't taught in school. Its fairly easy to show but isn't part of the curriculum.

The way I was taught to hand cash transactions is as follows:

If just say the item was $7.10 and the customer gave me a $20 note. I'd start the change with coins. If I pulled out a 50 cent piece I'd say that's 760, then two 20 cent pieces that's $8. Then a two dollar coin, that's 10, then a $10 note. That's $20. Start from the sale price and work up to the amount given to establish the difference to be paid, the change.

However I've noticed lately when paying for an item the default payment is now electronic. Even when I pull out cash to pay for a transaction, the cashier pulls out the electronic payment machine and starts keying in the transaction. Most probably within 5 years if one pays a transaction in cash, it will be considered to be quite weird and archaic.
