How are wing area defined?

Hi guys,

I was wondering if everyone knew how wing area are defined? Is it the total area (3D shape including top and bottom surfaces) or the projected area (2D, like if you were to measure the area of the wing's shadow) ?

I am interested in making my own wings from CAD files and the area I get on my software (1,140 cm2 for a 56 cm wingspan) seams much larger than that of commercial wings of similar size.

I attach some pictures of the CAD model for reference.
