Hello,
I've been kitesurfing for almost 20years and decided to start foiling. I have the chance to buy a secondhand foil and board. Moses Vorace 97 (2016) with 580 front and 330 back wing. I know this is far from a beginners foil set up but I feel like I can't let this one go. My goal is to do races one day so I think I should put a more forgiving, slower front wing. What wing would be best? Do I need to replace the rear wing?
and also does a more recent Moses wing fit on the 2016 Moses MVF680 fuselage?
cheers,
karl

Hi Charlie,

That rig will work fine, but it may be a little challenging to learn on initially. You can always buy it (assuming the price is right), and try first and if the difficulty level is too high, you can purchase the 590 Easy wing. The 330 tail is fine. I haven't seen the 2016 fuse, but I am assuming it is the same as the 2017 and I know that is compatible with all modern wings and masts. The beauty of Moses gear is it's compatability, and performance. As with all foils, it's best to learn behind a boat initially. If learning on the 97mm Mast, make sure you are protected with helmet and impact vest. Alternatively, see if you can find a mate with a really short mast to learn the basics, then switch to your rig.

Thanks for that DM
the plan is to learn with a short mast demo foil I can use at the local surfclub. After that I will try the moses foil.
Will buy impact vest and helmet first of course
cheers,

If I had my time again I would start on a 683. So much lift and easy to ride. Heaps of potential for waves and lite wind

I learnt to foil on the Cabrinha for 6 months then I got the 2017 Moses Fluente (550 front wing and 330 rear wing). Its a stable and fast setup. Great for exploring / long distances.

Just a few weeks ago I bought the new 683S and 450? wings. Be warned I had to buy a new fuselage too as the surf series are bigger wings not compatible with the kite foil range.

Top end speed is slower on this setup, surprisingly it's quite nimble and very stable to learn transitions on. Takes less speed to get up on the foil.

I must admit I bought this setup cause I was getting frustrated with my lack of progression on air gibes and because I wanted a more freeride / playful foil. If I started with this setup I would have progressed a lot quicker!

Would be interested to try 683 - have 633, everyone raves about it, but it seems a few chose 683 over 633.
Have you had a chance to compare both? Why is 683 better for you?

Haven't tried the 633. I can only repeat what I read in other reviews. 683 apparently has all the light wind and stability advantages of the 633 with a bit more nimbleness and top end.

I startet with Slingshot Hoverglide, made a huge mistake to "upgrade" to 590 (next step/Carbon ) and am totally happy with 633 now - which undoubtedly is the very best beginner foil with endless potential (and available with shorter aluminium masts as well). You don?t have a stall speed threshold to overcome with 633 which will save you 99% of the dolphin ride situations. Don?t spend any money on fake bargains !

Why did you think it was a huge mistake? I ask as I'm looking at upgrading from my HG to Moses setup with the 590 wing.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the 590 wing. Horses for courses that is all....Might not have worked for this guy but it might be just fine with you. Depends what you are after.

The 633 is a nice wing indeed but It doesn't do it all. It also depends on the level you have reached on the HG...I am planning to get a 633 or 683 which I will be able to swap from my 550 for when it is light of when I want to hit the wave. The 550 will definitely remain my main wing.

Hi Natho,

The 590 is an awesome wing, I love it. It has speed, low stall speed and is super versatile. If you are a beginner or have no interest in kiting faster than 20 knots or are looking for surf potential, then the 633 or 683 wings and fuse setup would probably be more beneficial. I haven't ridden a Moses foil I don't like. The Fluente on the 90 or 101 mast is just plain fun. The versatility of the mix and match system of Moses is what is sop attractive. All msts fit all fuselages. There is a good assortment of stabilizers and front wings for kiting, and a choice of three front wings for the SUP fuse, so something for everyone really.

We have one in demo if you swingf by this way. It's currently out, but is expected back

when u mention the shorter aluminium masts are u referring to the adapter plate from the us or is there another aftermarket solution?

Yeah, I'm always curious though why well-regarded gear doesn't suit someone, just to get a rounded view. I'm pretty much sold on idea of the Moses setup, torn between the speedier freeride wings and the surfier kinds for initial purchase, but I haven't quite reached level of skill I arbitrarily set myself before I think I deserve to go higher performance. I'm sure I won't become a better foiler by upgrading. I certainly haven't outgrown the hoverglide yet.

DM, yeah I definitely need to see you one of these days to demo, foil kites and hydrofoils. The hoverglide seems to be happiest cruising along around 12-15 knots. Maybe it's just me, but when I push it up into the 18-20 kt range, which is usually when I am well powered and then hit by a gust, I have to wrestle to keep the wing down by shuffling sometimes both my feet forward, and it feels pretty damn fast (but incredibly lame when I check out the GPS). So, unsure about going the faster or cruisier wings since I haven't experienced real controlled speed yet.

Hey mate I started on a hoverglude. Great beginner set up but it has it's limits. Does not like fast speeds it's a mow the grass type of set up and becomes unstable and a bit scary. When I changed to the 590 and 683 it was a complete game changer. Would recommend a demo

Thank you all for your comments! I've bought the second hand Vorace 97 and ordered the 590.
633 or other surf wing was no option as my budget is limited and would need a new fuselage for this wing.
So from the kitesurf wings the 590 should be the most forgiving and best to learn. I'll combine this with the original 345 stabilizer.
I'm aware that I will need a few more go's with the short mast hydrofoil I can use at my local surfclub but once I'm confident enough my 97 Vorace with the 590 should work fine!
cheers,
karl
