Haters are going to hate but this video of Kai Lenny on a wind wing at hookipa is making it harder and harder to hate on wind wings

..saw them in action on an outer reef break in Exmouth - riding with Sup (small) Foils.

They are no joke when used for the right purpose. In fact they make perfect sense.

The jokes on whoever doesn't get that.

Yeah nah I'm still not convinced.

Everybody else is welcome to go for it though.

There have been a couple of guys riding them around the local spots where I live. They go half as fast, cant really jump, and as far as I can tell would be better off on a foil windsurfer.

But whatever, not my problem.

Kite foiled but did not like the over-powered feeling on waves. Trying these to do this:

Here's a serious question: how long before someone attaches a bar and lines to one of these wings? Thinking a 3 line system with single front line attached to the centre strut on the leading edge and some sort of bridle system between the centre strut trailing edge and the wing tips would give you full control.....

Jesus look at the size of that board ... and is it just refraction, or is the board leaning over way more than the foil is? example about 0:22...

For me, foiling is about freedom from enormous kites and enormous boards and still struggling to get clear of the beach. Less is more.

Yeh hilly I was kite foiling out with them. They were both better than video on 6 foot sup boards (not that boat in the vid). Controlling speed and not out running the kite was a nightmare ... those guys just killed the power and rode the waves.

it has its place and until you are chasing the conditions they were in you are never gonna get it.

Tin foilers?

Just call 'em wingnuts.

Haters are always going to hate Breezy.

They just don't get it, no they don't go as fast, no they don't jump as high but they are a **** load of fun and can do things you cant do with a kite or windsurfer.

As for attaching a bar and lines to them or the other one, attaching a mast, just shows how much you guys are missing the point.

Most surfers and windsurfers (those that haven't relented and joined our ranks) think kiting is not cool, what do you guys think?

There's definitely a place for these in offshore or extreme onshore for wave foiling. Assuming you can magically make it past the breakers.

So do you think places like One Eye should be a kiter only zone?

You do realise surfers and windsurfers were riding it first.

Imagine how they felt when all of a sudden what they perceived to be these "crazy kiters started invading the place and dropping their kites with 100's of metres of limb slicing, torso entangling strings"

I do agree though there is no place for foils and kite wings in spots like that, it's scary enough on a kite or windsurfer.

If you look at the waves in the video Hilly posted they are nothing like One Eye, the kind of waves most foilers want are not the same as kiters and windsurfers usually want, so IMO opinion it should spread the crowd out more.

Personally I actually want to downwind on the unridden open ocean swells, so that is at least one less kiter in the wave zone.

Or they go out at One Eye and get dropped in on by windsurfers

Sweet so we will see you at overhead gnaraloo on your wing then??

I am definitely keen on the wings and they do have some unique abilities when it comes to riding waves with a foil but they also have some limitations when compared to a kite especially in negotiating big surf and getting out through breaks with no channel

yeh surely these will work for ocean swell downwinders on a sup foil....

I had a go on one...well I drifted downwind, it layed turned over in the water and I violently swore the entire time... It's not as easy as it looks...

These wings look ok when they are the only thing on the water. Put a decent kitesurfer or windsurfer in the mix and the wing starts to look very slow and boring. No doubt with time and invention they will get better but they have got a long way to go before it will tempt me.

Not on a foil in the waves. Some of you are missing the mark and the its best use. When used for certain situations it is far superior. I've seen it first hand being on a kite and foiling and wish I was doing what they were. Try not to fix your point of view and what you only think you know. It all depends on what you are chasing.

Exactly.

They are not trying to compete with kites or windsurfers, they have a completely different purpose and surprisingly it's not about trying to go as fast as possible with the available amount of wind but about being able to switch of the wind power and harness the wave/swell energy.

I can see some will never get it.
