Hi
Does anyone have experience snow kiting in Japan? Specifically Hokkaido.

I am heading there for three weeks snowboarding and was thinking of packing my Hyperlinks. Have never snow kited before.

Any tips on where to go would be great.

Thanks, Jack

Hi
I've been to Nozawa once and Hakuba twice and Niseko once many years ago.
I never saw anyone snow kiting in those areas. Too many trees and way to busy on regular slopes for it.
There may be more remote areas you can go to at an extra cost.
cheers

Thanks. Yeh we will have a car. Yeh there are fields deep with snow and no trees as far as the eye can see.I met a guy in Melbourne who had been snow kiting in Hokkaido.

went over to niseko last year with a bunch of kiting mates. we all packed kite gear cause, why not. but couldnt get any information over there. no one has even heard of it, its not a thing they do.

but with a car you'll find plenty of places where its possible. find a japanese translater to see if you can get permission. but you'll be breaking new ground, good luck

watch out for deep snow, if you have to walk 50 m in waist deep powder with no slope to slide down , you'll regret it pretty quick

The only place I know of is a festival in Nagano, and the guys who live there use the spot.

No reason why you couldn't just set up and blast around the paddy fields until someone came and yelled at you...

My experience is that there is either snow and no wind, or wind and no snow.

I'm heading to Japan today for 18 days. Will be doing a week of snowboarding in Myoko Kogen. I will ask the mountain staff if or where snow kiting is allowed and post it here for you. Japan is a pretty conservative and risk adverse society. I wouldn't be surprised if a past "incident" with a snow kiter had seen them banned at all the ski areas.

There were local guys kiting at Hakuba last season, snow covered rice paddy fields

Just got back from Japan. After asking various mountain staff, the consensus, as mentioned above, seems to be a snow park in Hakuba. There were trees everywhere where we went skiing around Myoko and Nagano, so the flat, lowland snow covered rice paddys are probably the main options in Japan.
