..... bunch of us sitting around enjoying a beer or 3 post session, dude turns up and announces he just bought a kite.

"That's cool new guy"

He says,,, "I saw you before, I've seen you out there before"

"Ummm ok, that's cool"

He says...."where's the best place to kite"... ?

"Ummm, have you kited before" ?

"Nah, but I've seen it on youtube"

" hey best you do some lessons new guy,,, these guys here (as I point to the local dealer/instructors whose been doing it since 2004) can help you" ??!!

"Nah, its ok,,,,,, I already told you, I've seen how to do it on youtube"

"yeah ok"

"bye!",,, as he wanders off !

Must be that time of year again.

He is in the unconscious incompetence stage of learning. He doesn't know what he doesn't know.

Sounds like you didnt impart enough knowledge to him to shift him too conscious incompetence.

Agree with Plummett! This video does a great job of explaining this concept and how to try to break through.

Always blows my mind to see this. About once a year (last one was a month ago actually) we get a customer asking us to hire some gear with absolutely zero experience while being fully confident they can figure this out solo with zero instruction! Thankfully it doesn't happen too often otherwise we would have a lot of accidents. Really enjoyed the video shared by Tom, a must watch especially for instructors.

I am extremely pleased and amused that a kite instructor has brought two of my big areas of interest - learning theory and kiting - together in such a concise, coherent, entertaining and on-point video! Great work!

... he's certainly gunna be in the unconscious stage soon enough with his attitude,,,,,we had no chance to impart a thing to the guy as he took off too quickly!

This guy's a nightmare in the making me thinks!

So what happened? Was the guy a dick or did he work it out?

About 20 years ago the local instructor had a free come and try day on 2-line Wipikas. By the end of it we were showing him stuff.

Haven't seen him again yet

We tried to advise him to get lessons etc etc but he wasn't the listening type ....he was the telling type ....you get that.
Reminded us of the lads who turned up at the beach with a kite and used a belt around their waist for a harness ... we tried to advise as well but they didn't listen either. Their attempts weren't pretty and they didn't come back.
cheers

I personally think this behaviour should be encouraged. Last couple of seasons have been rediculous crowded in Perth. I think if more newbies got skittled through carparks it might help to deter others from taking up the sport like in the old days. The rise of safety has made kiting too appealing to the average kook.

You would quickly change your mind if you ever got knocked out or seriously injured by an out of control newbie trying to teach himself or if kiting became forbidden at your favourite local kite spots because an out of control newbie seriously injured a member of the public.

Your logic only makes sense if out of control newbies that decide to teach themselves or learn from a friend do this in areas where there is absolutely no one else around. Unfortunately that is almost never the case.

... talking of not trying to judge.

A few years ago, this bright spark bought all the gear, lots of lovely stuff. Hadlow Edition team series board, boots,,,,,you name it, he had it. He talk the talk, man, it was gunna be awesome to see him kite,,, by the sounds of it, he was gunna be a gun.

Then on a lazy Saturday arvo while waiting for the wind, we see off in the distance a guy rigging up. Eventually he's ready, walks to his kite,,,, WTF,,,,,he throws it in the air and try with all his might, run to the bar.

"Hey, whose got some bino's, we gotta see who the hell that is".

"OMG, its the 'got all the gear' dude,,,,,, f me, he's got no idea". "He aint no gun sailor". Bwahahahaha.

Pretty persistent bugger though, he tried over and over,,,,, and you guessed it, didn't get to fly his kite that day.

Luckily he was way up the beach with all the room in the world so at least he couldn't hurt anyone,,,,, thank the stars he did that right and had plenty of room.

Probably gunna be a 'Darwin Award Recipient'.
