Sheet in on your trim strap a bit, may sound "counter intuitive" but trimming your kite correctly makes a huge difference. In light winds I always shorten my centre lines a bit (others may call this "depowering" the kite) with the trim strap and test it by pulling bar all the way in to check kite doesn't fly over my head and too far forward.
Watch a beginner student applying the same principles I was explaining in the short tutorial above. This is a 90kg student on his 10th hour of lesson with no practice in between lessons and no prior experience whatsoever. I never thought it would be possible to teach any newbie to ride in sub 10 knots winds.

For a more effective waterstart lifting yourself from the water on the upstroke of the Kite prior to the downstroke is the most efficient to build quick apparent wind , also all good showing some to light wind start, but relaunch in sub 10 knts is more a priority than the actual waterstart, a beginner is highly likely to get himself into dramas kiting in light winds than decent strengths
