Heading to Cairns/PD in a couple of weeks from Melbourne for five days of warm weather. After any advice on best spots for kitefoiling. How is the water depth close to shore? Do tides make a big difference? Good downwinders? Thanks

I've been up here a few months Jimm, so I am not an expert.

The local crew are very helpful when you meet them at the kite spots, but very few of them do much online.

It seems the 3 main kite spots are the south end of Four Mile Beach at Port Douglas, Palm Cove and Yorkey's Knob. I am just learning to kite foil myself. Yorkey's seems OK on any tide. Port Douglas is a long walk to deep water on low tide. Generally speaking, it seems to be windier at PD than YK.

I've still not kited Palm Cove. I think when the wind does not have much E in it, Palm Cove might be better than YK. The prevailing trade winds are S-SE.

YK is far less touristy than PC or PD.

If I was to move here permanently for kiting (I am from VIC), I think i would move to PD.

I've just been up in Port and Cairns too, the south end of 4 mile is a big walk at PD but well worth it.
Plenty of wind. If you can get out on a reef tour where you can foil. We went out with Bretto from Wind and Swell he took us to MacKay Cay. It's so cool foiling in crystal blue water.

Horey.

I second WindSwell and Brett up there on those tours. You should all check out his photos and videos on Insta. Bloody perfect troppo conditions and locations to go kiting in, as good as or even better than heading overseas frankly. Yes I know Brett. Great bloke!

pro tip: next time in PD when it's super low tide, ask Brett for a borrow of his landboard. You'll get there and back in no time.
