Anyone know any good places to learn to kite foil on the Sunshine Coast?. I was thinking Lake Weyba but then read conflicting comments about the depth.

Hi, this post beat me to it.. The SE. Qld site guide.. I have gradually done a few updates with comments about foiling in some.

This link opens on map view aerial of Cotton tree with just weather site displayed (red circle off Cotton Tree camp site). If U tick on sites option the two here also display. Etc.
www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1TAirzud8RXT-EpLY_i6DZx9yuVQ&msa=0&ll=-26.648378999999974%2C153.102207&z=16

Weyba - I am about to go there for the rest of the day taking a 72cm mast and low aspect large wing - I anticipate a few run ins at start / finish with bottom and may be one sand bank up north. Overall not an issue unless using 85cms + mast with high aspect ratio wing ( neither a good combo for learning to foil). G8 place to learn and get advice. less kite foilers to Wing dinger foilers. George operates his school Adventure Sports there.

Other places. Assume U R kite competent. Cotton Tree. I either foil in or walk in from North Shore in a N.Ely. OK in SEly but be aware of tide and can get pinned to the shore by swell in NEly on south side.. Golden Beach there are 4 sites listed give river mouth and scout shed area a miss other two are good when wind is on. Also checkout Lake Cootharaba but be aware U R on your own its a big big lake and if your board takes a wave induced walk while you get your kite back in the air (not always possible) you will have trouble finding it. So advanced kite skills and good conditions (kite in air easily).
Really useful, consider adding an extra safety leash on harness to attach to the board easily b4 sorting kite when wind lighter = gold.

This is an overview of the coast with weather downwinders and sites all itemised. The google bit works on phones/pads/pcs.
Cheers

The SUNRISE Beach weather feed applies to Lake Weyba minus 2-5 knots

Weyba (Lake) 10/01/22 - end of day when I got there - 4 wing foilers 2 kite foilers few L platers in shallow TT zone.
FWIW
In 2020 ish early on for a few visits talked with the guy appointed to start building the OZ Olympic foiling team - a few times I saw some very stylish footwork going on..
Suggest give it a crack - but NB it is a drift launch and on water landing site (knee deep water ).
Cheers

Good info as usual AP.

KP - weyba is best for complete beginner. It's deep enough if you walk out far enough. You don't want to start with a long mast if possible anyway, 45cm is perfect, 60cm if you can't get that, progressing to longer masts as you improve.

While the drift launch is a pain (initially) and the long walk in and out is a pain (always) and the wind is a bit on & off, it's the most consistent and safest place to learn on sunny coast. Not tide affected like most spots. If you get in serious trouble (gear breaks etc) you can always just wade in through chest deep water. I once had wind die completely on far side and waded across the whole damn lake. Booties recommended the bottom is muddy when you get out to the foiling depth (that's a clue to tell when you're out far enough, when you hit mud go 50m further then start).
