I'm heading there for the first time in a few weeks and just wanted to get tips on where to kite, where to stay, and whether I should bring gear vs rent?

I've got no real preference, I enjoy smaller waves and twin tip riding, and just learned to foil (still working on transitions).

For waves we either go to the east coast (phillip island) or west coast (13th beach, Ocean Grove etc), there' both about a 2 hour drive from Melbourne. You can kite at St Kilda but it can get a little crowded, The Zu Boardsports also allows you to rent gear but I'd just try and bring your own as I think renting is a few $100. If you have a car and the wind/waves align then I'd have a go at driving out to the waves, there's always a bunch of guys out there.
