What is Kite Racing?:

Formula Kite Class: If you are looking for high speed action, look no further than the exciting Kiteboard Formula Course racing. This ISAF sanctioned racing class, now included in the Olympic warmup events namely the Sailing World Cups, continues to grow in popularity world-wide with close-to-shore action that thrill crowds, and even closer racing amongst the competitors. Kite racers now also regular features as nominations for ISAF Rolex Sailor of the year, Steph Bridge (UK), Jonny Heineken (USA) & Erica Heineken (USA) all receiving nominations in recent years. The Kite Formula fleets easily make their way around an windward/leeward courses in 8-30 knots, with international events being run from 6 knots. Windward/leeward courses require the racers to hike hard up wind, returning to the bottom of the course and competing several laps. A racers apply their technical skills for both kite and board control, understanding of the changing wind conditions and on course strategy to out maneuverer their rivals. As one of the most accessible sailing classes, equipment and training are easy and affordable to come by. In Perth there has been a surge in the numbers of Formula racers and expect to see more as the sport progresses towards fully Olympic inclusion.

Foil Class: New to the Kite racing scene but certain here to stay is the Kite Foil Class. This class using kites, along with state of the art high-tech racing hydrofoil board, make their way around the course at a jaw dropping pace and are easily able to double the speed of the wind any at times even more. Hydro foiling has been around for many decades, but its without debate that since the most recent Americas cup there has been an unprecedented spike in popularity with foiling, and this is most certainly been the case in the world of kite racing. Significant developments even over the past year, have provided foiling platforms that are easier to learn on and more stable at higher speed. Kite foiling is showing is a class to be taken seriously, not just on short course racing but almost any sailing event; locally foils having won the recent King of Carnac, dominated to show they are the fastest sailing class on the Swan River challenge, and even unofficially a foil in the NZ Coastal Classic finished in the top 3 after 120 miles of open ocean racing.
