Hi Guys,
I am new to this forum and I would be very grateful for your advice.
I have a 24 footer stingray: The boat is well maintained and in a very good condition with full safety gears.
www.google.com.au/search?q=stingray+240+cs&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwierZe2w9fYAhXMXrwKHQEKDocQ_AUICigB&biw=1552&bih=1196#imgrc=ZvCS9gytG27ixM:
I have been using it for one month for river cruising mainly. I am thinking about making the trip from Freo to Rotto.
We are a family of four, two adults and 2 children.
Will this vessel be able to do it? I will be leaving very early in the morning and return very early in the morning wind will be roughly between 17-15 knots and waves 1.5 m .
How difficult is it to navigate my way to Longreach bay? I do have a chart plotter.

I am very sorry if I asked many questions but I need to get this right otherwise the boss "my wife" will never let us do it again

Your help is very much appreciated

Suggest you post this in the sailing, rather than kitesurfing section, you may get a more useful response!

Cheers

Sounds like you need to do the trip with a skipper who knows what they are doing. Maybe take your boat and get some sea time in before attempting this trip. Experience is a wonderful thing.

Its an easy trip out and back.

leave with the easterly in the morning and come back with the seabreeze.

good charts are available and if you study them you will not go wrong.

take them with you. they are very accurate & detailed.

just take your time

the Searay is a very sea worthy vessel. ideal for day & over nighters to Rottnest.

you can, at certain times, get in with others and follow them.

just relax & enjoy the trip.

Your 24 Stingray will lap it up.

Less than 1.5m and 15 knots is ideal for your first few trips, although your boat will handle much more than this, but it becomes uncomfortable.

Longreach, like many of the bays, is a bit of a tight channel to get into, you need to stay right on the lead lights and they'll guide you in. If heading to the north side of Rotto, there's a difficult to see marker off the NE of the island to navigate around.

If coming from Freo - I would suggest going on a nice day and following the other boats from the heads into Thomson's. You can explore from there if you wish. Other boats will be heading from Thomson's to the north side and you can follow them on the inside of Transits. From here you can note where the boats from Freo to the north side are tracking, most go fairly wide, see if you can find that marker to the NE.

Are you kidding! I saw some guys cruise over in a surfcat the other day. You will be fine. Just travel in the mornings

As everyone says, your boat will get to rotto in all conditions. Its just a matter of player comfort as it gets windier, wetter and rougher!

Having said that, it only takes one bad trip to stop the wife and kids from ever wanting to go again! In my opinion wives are very attuned to any hesitation on your part. As soon as your unsure where that marker is or where the channel is they'll start stressing, the kids will start crying, and its game over for future trips.

My advice is to go over with a mate, ideally someone who knows rotto. Read up on all the channel entrances to all the bays you're interested in and go to all of them. Make your mistakes, get it wrong, find the markers etc. Take a couple of beers. Have a swim. Get comfortable with the trip yourself before you take the family there.

Cos you only get one chance with them!

Hey Guys,
Thank you again for your much needed advice.
We made it to Rottnest and back in one piece :)
I followed the ferry which led me to Thompson bay and it was fairly straightforward from there.
Best wishes

Must've been a bit bumpy, it's been blowing its guts out sunrise to sunset over there.

We came back Saturday lunchtime and it was choppy as. Smaller boats have been getting flogged:
