why? what am I missing?

Whats not to like?
Indestructable steel hull, good designer, nice clean uncluttered interior, solid dodger, shoal water ability, well maintained.
just my opinion though, we all have different taste.

I would dispute the indestructible steel hull bit. There is an immaculate steel Adams 36 motorsailer here at the moment. The other steel yachts here are a mixture of heavily maintained vessels and rusting hulks.

I was refering to the boat in the add not poorly maintained hulks.

Nice boat and a very good ad. I was not aware they had a steel and lead keel. Excellent video.

yes , well set up boat maintained to cat 1or 2 minus the HF radio. great vids in the add x2

I like to see someone here put a Sydney to Hobart syndicate together with Rogue Wave and then some of us can then cross it off the Bucket List.

She's in pretty good nick, but there would be more competitive Hobart boats for the same $ or less. That's not a criticism, more a reflection of the fact that RW seems more like an all-rounder than a Hobart racer.

Nice steel S&S 36 at a reasonable price. Not sure about the position of the wheel though (designed for Tas conditions?) - would look better with a tiller.

Saw that - better than expected when I saw the price - yes, interesting spot for the wheel.

- yes, interesting spot for the wheel.

I like it . Would make single handing easy and you could tuck up under the dodger whilst at the helm,, looks real comfortable, it puts you in about the same pozzy when using a tiller.

In addition to the wheel tucked under the dodger there's numerous hints that it's built for Tassie:
- foam insulated
- Diesel heater in saloon
- no shower
- stereo cassette player

Looks like boom roller reefing and hanked on headsails and very minimal sail controls. A solo sailor's nightmare!

If someone with the right skills spent another 15k on a furler, new winches etc. they'd have pretty decent classic S&S.
I'd have to do something with that helm though, and would hope its fit out is compatible with a steel hull.

Behave yourself

Here in Tassie cassette players are still the go

Next you will be picking on our A scope sounders and shag pile carpet headlining

If you do decide to get rid of that flasher sounder I'll have first dibs. I have a Lowrance version in my yacht and one in my tender and another spare from HG. {same as yours}.

This boat has been on my watch list for years. Think of the Ohlson 35 as a more seaworthy version of an SS34!!!!! It has been overpriced for sometime and the owner is asking for all offers. I would suggest taking a look at the steel SS36 in Tassie then making an offer on the Ohlson in the same sort of money.

Yeah nice boat, terrible photos from the broker, first dozen photos wasted by showing that yes it's a boat floating on the water, taken from way too far away, and moving 2 inches to the left to take the next photo

A 56 year old steely with foam insulation for 20 grand or a 47 year old glass job in a cyclonish area for a whisker under $40 k ???? Tell him he's dreaming ! I get what your saying Ramona the Ohlson would be a reasonable buy for $20 k but what's the insurance criteria on 50 yr old vessels ? Is it even possible ?

The asking price is actually 33 grand but they are after offers. The location of the yacht has probably coloured the owners expectations on the true value. As for insurance you need 3rd party property damage and that's all I have on my boat. My boat is 40 years old. Not many younger boats about really, they must be hiding in marinas somewhere!

Its really saddening that people are having to base so many decisions on the wants of insurance companies lately.
Hopefully third party insurance will remain available for older boats and owners who are willing to take on the risk of damage to their own boats.
There must also be some kind of next level survey for restored boats to wind the clock back when it comes to insureability.

They could introduce a Cessna SIDs type program like has been done for Cessna 100 series aircraft.
It would basically involve the insurance company nominating a shipwright to pull your boat apart and put it back together to check its
structure for seaworthiness. Might cost you 20 - 30 grand though

yes , may have to put a HF in . But i think they are considering scrapping that reg anyhow. Not that much cost to actually enter the race either , a few hundred i think ?
Training crew and incidentals would add up though , also delivery's would be a huge cost !

Defiance 30 for $5500!!!!!

Yes, it needs some work and is handicapped with wheel steering. 4 litres of "Metal Gleam" is about $40. Scrub all the uppers and even the interior with metal gleam [ventilate] and there is a nice boat under that grime. One of the good Yanmars.

Dunno many 36'ers that pay for crew training and deliveries. I haven't done a Hobart for eons but we used to kick the tin for food and some of the crew would bring the boat back. I even know a very competent sailor who, along with others of the crew, bought "his" owner a new headsail for the Hobart. As he said, he respected the fact that the owner decided he didn't want to update that sail but since my mate isn't short of bucks he bought the skipper a present.

She used to be a mainstay of the JOG scene and did Coffs etc. There may still be a full set or two of useful dacron sails down below, since her owner in those days maintained her pretty well IIRC. I notice some other neglected boats around Port Stephens are also currently for sale - perhaps Maritime has been sniffing around them.

The one in the ad has a 'glass deck. You can see in the photos where the bulkheads are bonded in. There are timber decked Defiances though and at least one all timber one like in the photo above. There are also 2 boats with fibreglass decks on double diagonal timberhulls!
