There has been a price reduction on this SS34. Looks like a tall rig on a Mk 1 hull. Electric motor for all you greenies!

SS34 is at the top of my list, and of course, it's locked down in Sydney! :(
Does anyone here know if the SS34 association is still running? I sent an email and got no reply.
They are still going. Just had their annual general meeting. I'm not sure whether it's worth joining these days and paying a fee for something that is covered everywhere else for free. If you have any particular queries just ask Morningbird.
I'm just curious to how this SS34 repowered by an electric motor sells.
Prices of yachts still seem to be going up. When I was looking for my North Shore 38 six to nine months ago 70000 got you a nice one with slightly run down ones in the 50s. Now there is one at $155000 and another at $115000 and average seems to be about 90. The only ones down around the old average price of 70000 have been for sale for ages and probably have something wrong with them.

A 54 foot hunter for $28k. I'd be tempted if I still lived in Sydney. The cost of keeping a 54 ft would be unbearable though.

I looked at that...
If you read reviews of the boats on Cruisers Forums it appears they are a pretty crap build.
What it needs is someone to spend , say $300k and many hundreds of hours on it so they can have a boat worth $150k.
Also, if you ever need a marina berth , expect some difficulty finding one and be prepared to spend $$$$.

That's actually good value. Easy repair with the cabin sole and the engine won't have much wrong with it. Worst-case scenario replace with a short motor. I personally would have trouble spending 10 grand on it! Good deck gear and a self tacking headsail. If you are a pensioner living away from Sydney in NSW the mooring fees would be reasonable {pay only 50%}.
The downside is the size and draft. Two deep for the local slips. Gear would be heavy, take two blokes the carry a full battened mainsail! Costs of sail replacement would be eye-watering. But that's a nice teak interior and the hull and deck would look like new after a Metal Gleam scrub.

I'm curious to see what system they installed - motor, batteries, solar, charger - and how it performs.
Had a browse the other week & saw the last yacht my dad owned has come up for sail. Great fun boat going downwind
Pity I don't have a spare 30K

Very clean look inside. That's the way to sell a boat. When I was looking I saw a few boats for sale by people in their 80s that had every book and piece of equipment that they had collected over the last 40 years. The clutter traps smells too.

.....aaah yes, but when you're selling it's not a 'smell', its merely a 'slight odour'!
Good value East Coast 31. Unusual to have a quarter berth in these.

This one seems to be a bit cheap. Not sure what's going on here!

If he doesn't know the condition of the sails and the dodger has rotted away then it looks like its just sat on it's mooring for a very long time.

The engine has had a coat of paint. I think if it was 15 grand it would be cheap. Secondhand Kubota is worth a couple of grand and a new furler is about what he is asking for the lot.
This A31 is going to go quickly obviously - probably as we speak. A few weekends work for a crew of 2-3 (including one of them diving for a few hours) would have it sparkling.
Or you could have this for 10x the price and it has the inferior sail drive - assuming the $3.8k one has shaft drive which photo 10 indicates to be the case, be good if it had a folding prop also.............

Iconic boat in great condition with new engine

gone now. I was thinking the seller missed a zero. Who knows the back story, perhaps owned by a relative and just wanted it gone. Someone got a good start on their boat if it was at the listed price.

Did you mean to type 40...............
See here a Cav30 with fractional rig. Used to own a sister ship - really top boats. Walk through transom a godsend............
yachthub.com/list/yachts-for-sale/used/sail-monohulls/cavalier-30/267724
The Cav 30 being a stern extended version of the Cav 28, can you tell us if the 30 performs significantly better than the 28??
Depends what you mean by "significantly better".
The 28 only came in masthead rig version. The 30 was done in mhead and fractional - not as many of the latter as far as I am aware. I don't know the sail areas of the two 30 versions compared to the 28 but would guess they might be a bit more. The version above and one which I had was fractional - so longer luff and boom mainsail, and looks like the mast was stepped a bit further fwd for the 30 fractional rig as is usual for a fractional rig due to the bigger mainsail to control the sail area centre of effort point compared to the centre of lateral resistance - even accounting for the extra 2ft on the stern.
sailboatdata.com/sailboat/cavalier-28
The fractional rig gives the advantage of being able to sail upwind reasonably well with just the main - most mhead rigs don't sail upwind well with just the main. A fractional rig yacht in the 24-30ft range is so easy to sail single handed with full main and no3 jib. And the walk through transom obviously makes it so easy to get on and off from dinghy.
I would say the 30 fractional sailed better than the mhd 30 and 28 but probably not a lot in it - imho the 30 fractional fastest due to extra waterline and better more tunable rig, 30 mhd next due to extra waterline, then 28.
I guess my question was directed at the length. Different rig configureations make it a new ball game.
From the look of the 30 hull I don't think there would be much more waterline length even when heeled. Between a 30 and a 28 with the same rig I don't think there would be much in it.
They are both beautiful looking boats and I would be happy to own either.
Alas slightly out of my price bracket, and technically a project as it is unfinished, but...impressive!

My mate with the 42 foot alloy Cole has found lead sinkers and all sorts of tools and bits of stuff scattered about in the bilges and the alloy which is unpainted looks new.

That's reassuring especially with a boat that has probably had many owners messing about with it. I was under the impression that small little bits of metal offcuts on the wrong side of the periodic table of aluminium could cause electrolysis to eat
a hole through an aluminium hull quite easily.

As long as the bilge is clean and dry no problem
Ideal harbour sailer. One of Jonathon's specials. I like the look of this one.
