Some home and contents insurance actually provides members of the household public liability cover even off the property. Not sure if it would cover the boat itself it but assuming the boat is your property you would be liable anyway might be worth checking with your insurer. The example I would think of is if you're at park playing cricket and injure someone you may be covered by your home policy.
Apia and Club Marine will not insure my Swanson 1986 for any type of insurance.
NRMA will insure comprehensively for $16000 with a survey for a premium of $541.
I am probably waiting four weeks for the rigger to be available to do the work and complete the out of water survey.
The Insurance Council of Australia is returning my call tomorrow.
I will let you know how I get on.
Yes New Wave Marine insured us also with no survey and at a reasonable annual fee - they have a very easy on-line system to fill out. Note however that they cover rig damage at market value only - ie what you say the rig is worth as a fraction of the total yacht value - so the rig cover is not a new replacement rig. Which is all totally fair imho.

Hi, which rigger did you go with?
Your and my friend, but I have to wait four weeks.
Thanks for dropping over, hope to catch you soon.
I'm with Youi
You won't be next year !!!
Please explain, if not email me.
Thanks.
Most of them are very lucky. You have insurance.
Probably from this year, there are completely new rules
for insuring boats, not just yacht, power boats too.
For instance, the yacht insured 10 years, after changed
ownership is practically not insurable any more.
Sure there are exceptions.
I did contact and filled forms, roughly 15 ins. comp. and brokers.
No luck at all. I used last resort, go overseas.
edwardwilliam.com/ , I was lucky there.
Go through finding insurer is frustrating/ shocking.
Since the title of this thread was getting new "Public Liability Insurance only", it looks like that is unobtainable for 10y+ old boats on moorings (which would probably account for over 50% of sailboats in Australia).
The people going with New Wave and Apia, did you try to get Liability-only but were forced to go Comprehensive, or were you preferring comprehensive anyway ?

I only tried for comprehensive

I only tried for public liability because I was under the impression that every insurance company required the rigging replaced after ten years, or at the very least a positive rigging survey. This is not the case with Apia.
I got the same run around as charriot an underwriter in WA offered me 3rd party only for $890. I declined his offer !
We lost another boat at Bundeena four weeks ago, to go with the five lost in 2016.
Comprehensive was essential.
Not sure but could be worth it. i got 3rd party here in nz with a crew called " Themarinashop" the underwriter is called MS AMLIN
for my 17 tonne steely it was 380nz p.a subject to a condition report, in water report. which was pretty basic. boats 1963. Was easy. Not sure if theyll do overseas boats but theyre super helpful and the underwriter is in London, so maybe???
