Soft boards have way better rails, rockers and bottom contours than they used too. They surf fine these days.

Yeah the MF's look pretty good, well developed shapes and everyone I've spoken to who own them love them.

Given that most of them can barely stand up let alone carve a face I take their assessments with a pinch of salt.

$1000 for a "first board", absolute crazy talk, no way...your in Qld man. Boards are a dime a dozen in the longboard department.

If your a beginner, look at a softop longboard, they do less damage to themselves, you & others.

Customs are for people who know their abilities & have some idea on how a board change will improve their waveriding in the waves they ride.

If your really keen on a fibreglass board, look in gumtree for a board about 9 to 10 foot up to about $500.

You should be looking at a softop, 8'5 to 9'0 for your first board mate. An 8'5 softop will paddle & catch waves better than a 9'5 firebreglass longboard. And at the end of the day when your ready to step up to a fibreglass board your likely to get a better return on your first board provided you didn't leave it in the sun or car. If you go the softop, just make sure it does not have "bubbles" from being left in the sun.

Agree with the boys that $1,000 for a first board is way too much. What you need now to what you will want in 6 and 12 months are 2 different things.

Soft top could be a good idea as once you are past this stage is good for the rest of the family.

I have a 7'6 Clearwater (50 litres) that would suit a beginner as is a fun shape quite wide and forgiving. I've been meaning to list it in the Buy & Sell section but not got round to it. Let me know if your interested. It is a couple of years old but not a mark on it. We have 6 Clearwaters now and will be getting another once I move this on.

Sorry, didn't mean to pimp.

Those dims are suited to someone with some weight. That would be a heavy board

Pretty common dims for some of the blokes in here.

Agree they are on the big side though. Way too big for me.

But think the Original Poster said he was 90 plus and never surfed so needs all the flotation he can get. Width would give him good stability for learning how to pop up too. And he is on the goldy where it seems bigger and wider is the norm. Especially as you go further north to Noosa.

Jyes boards aren't particularly heavy. As light as anything else in that size range that the OP was looking at.

If your a strong powerful back foot surfer those dims are a walk in the park.
