Hi guys.

I want to replace the centreboard gasket rubber in my Superlight 2, it's the glue in type, i want to know if anyone has found a good material to make a new one out of, i have seen it replaced with non factory stuff but can't remember what it was or where it come from, i think it was yellow, i was told there is also a pink coloured material that is also good.

Also which glue do you use?

Cheers Jas..

Buy the gasket from Windpower and use epoxy glue. See above for some other suggestions involving maxicure superglue and polyurethane. Maybe loctite superglue would work. This might also be worth a try:

www.theboatwarehouse.com.au/boat-building-maintenance/silicones-sealants-adhesives/3m-marine-adhesive-sealant-fast-cure-5200/

Alternatively for new gaskets buy the Windsurfer LT gasket (Cobra) as that is the same gasket I think as the later model Mistral One Design was made just about the time Anders Bringdal was in charge. You can probably trim it down to fit.

Give Greg Johns a call at Windgenuity he may have some in stock and have some tips. I think a few of his people have a lot of experience with Mistral.

Someone here in Perth was making a gasket out of stuff from Bunnings for his LT so it is possible to do it if you are handy and have time.

I tried various materials on my F2 Lightning but they couldn't cope with the water pressure once the board was planing and resulted in a fountain of water at the back of the centreboard case, and a draggy feeling like I was towing a sea anchor.

After I fitted one of these Polyurethane gaskets the increase in speed was noticeable, and no water fountain:

Do you know the specs of the gasket? how thick is the material?

I have found a roll of Poly i can buy in a few different colours, it's 1800 x 330x 3mm thick.

I shouldn't have to order one from America, posting anything from the US is way to expensive these days, it's just a strip of poly so should be able to source some in Oz.

Yours sounds thicker...might be better so you may as well try it. Alternatively try this:

This one isn't quite wide enough, already contacted this fella, i have Glued down the one that was on there as the glue had come undone from being on there for years, i will see how that goes then start to experiment.

I used Loctite 4860 Instant Adhesive which cost me $20 for 20 g on ebay. I obtained a gasket from 247 boardsports: www.24-7boardsports.com/mistral-slot-flusher/. I fitted it myself to my Mistral Equipe 1993 CHS. I did this over the weekend. Now the board is ready to sail.

Ive grabbed one from AZULI. Ive tried rubber, sailcloth covered mylar pattern material. Nice n stiff but pita to get good adhesion.
Azulis works better than any other material ive used.

The advice on my 1993 Equipe CHS was from Jon of 24-7 board sports of the UK:

"Great, the slot flusher we have made will be a perfect fit, except that you will have to cut it to length.

There are 3 different lengths of flushers, which is why we have them made without the 2 crack stopper holes or the slit down the middle as we supply the blank made to fit the longest one - The holes and slit have to be done by you after cutting to length.

We will not be able to post the Glue to you, as this cannot be sent by post I'm afraid - hopefully you can get some locally? Loctite 4860 is what Mistral used originally, but its a crazy price over here, so we have some made in the UK which is a much better price, but the Postal guys are really getting hot on us posting this stuff...

Epoxy will not work I'm afraid - The Superglue 4860 from Loctite is a rubber modified product so it is more flexible than normal Superglue, but there may well be others with similar specification, but use only proper industrial grades, not the supermarket models ! "

I used the Epiglue on one board. The inferior gasket has since failed. Hope i dont damage the board removing the Epiglue.

The IMCO one design has a different slot flusher to the Equipe from 1991 onwards. I think the early Equipes used the one design slot flusher prior to 91. Not sure what board you are dealing with but be careful in cleaning up the Epoxy. I chiselled off carefully and very delicately with a sharp flat chisel any glue and rubber remaining from or on my gasket housing (assume it was loctite) without damaging the surface of the board housing but not sure how to clean up the Mistral with epoxy residue.. I would suggest you take advice on how to do it from an expert as it is easy to ruin these magnificient craft.

The one design one is the Black and White one, which has 5 x concealed screws on each side..

These suffer from the Black strip parting company with the white carrier - If everything is still there and in pretty good condition and no one has had a go at gluing it before, then it is possible to repair these and give them another few seasons service -I used normal loctite on my one design from Bunnings suitable for rubber but 4860 would be better as I have to regularly reglue it.

If it's this design and wrecked, it is possible to build a new slot flusher using the right glue on one with a couple of parallel battens, with the flusher glued to it and drilled/CSK to take longer screws. 24-7 boardsports can help with advice on that. I would also look to see if it is feasible to adopt and use a Windsurfer LT gasket on it as it looks a lot like the later One Designs used the same or similar to the LT. That is of course different to the 1989-200? Mistral Germany gaskets. I assume these post 200? boards and gaskets were made at the Cobra factory so it might well be possible :

i installed the windpower replacement gasket in my equipe 2. took my time out in the shop and did a nice flush fit install using G-flex epoxy.

but really not very happy with the gasket - too stiff IMO and has 'memory' after being deformed. but it's not worth worrying about at the moment since it works.

if i get tired of the centerboard being too stiff, i'll go to the giant PITA it will be to remove and install a softer durometer material. i did some research and found a likely candidate at a price less than the windpower gaskets but since i havent actually tried it, i can''t recommend at this time.

I sailed my 1993 Mistral Equipe CHS 1.5 yesterday launching out of Mounts Bay Sailing Club on the Swan River 4pm-6pm with my Mistral One Design 7.4 m2 sail in 13 knots of wind and the gasket worked perfectly with no hiccups. I sailed with Mike Kilduff NZ12 on his 1996 Mistral Equipe 2 CHS with NP World Cup Racing 7.0m2 who had an edge with his additional board volume but overall the Equipe I have acquired is a great board and I am very pleased with the gasket installation. I did spray silicone lubricant in the case to loosen the operation and that worked fine. The Loctite 4860 is holding superbly. Thanks also to 24-7 Boardsports for their help and some advice from Ian Sampson, friend and onetime Mistral dealer in WA. Hopefully we will have a raceboard class in WA again some day.
