ANNA MARIA, FLA. - A wing foil surfer was bitten by a shark near the Anna Maria City Pier. The incident happened on December 22. Erika Lane said she felt a vibration underneath her board and fell into the water."My board was actually pulled out from under me and at that moment, I hit the water. I was bitten. It didn't really hurt. It pinched and it was shocking," said Erika Lane.
Small black tip is the suspect, and the foil sounds fine. But first attack on a wing foiler nonetheless.
You aren't taken seriously as a water sport as there isn't at least 1 single Shark Incident So yesss! Finally recognition.
I know Erika well - we winged and dw bunch of times. Glad she is ok. Florida is the capital of shark bites. I hit something in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico few times winging. Felt like concrete wall - about half of a mile out, didn't stick around to see Just makes you think about rescue plan if something like this were to happen.
I can't help but think of Crocodile Dundee (or maybe hilly) looking at our American version of a shark bite, with a puzzled look on his face. Followed by the words " that's not a Shark Bite, THIS... (as he pulls off his pants to revile his wooden leg) is a SHARK BITE"!!!
LOL, Joking aside. Truly glad she's ok and it wasn't a bigger bull
Not the first. This happened off of North Carolina.

Where I wing a guys fuselage was bit by a shark. Rather than tell people I'm going kite foiling or wing foiling I tell them I'm going out to tickle the sharks.

Wow! that is a much worse incident. Glad he was ok and got away in time!
I know early on (4-5 years ago) Conner Baxter had his foil hit by a tiger on a downwind run here on Maui. But the shark seemed more interested in the strange foil thing than him. These two incidents in FL and NC are scarier because the shark attacked the person, after they fell in the water.

Nope, my buddy in North Carolina was bitten while winging last summer. Shark bit his foil and took him down. He punched the shark to get free. He had lots of stitches in his leg. He thought he was going to die, so he punched it hard.
Fun fact, by buddy and Erika in Florida, were both riding Lift foils. Another friend in Florida has had his GoFoil fuselage bitten several different times.
I've seen sharks several times while foiling and yet to be bitten. Maybe Armstrong was up to something with those black and white stripes.

I noticed the Lift coincidence as well. The kite forum link showed another lift fuse bitten.
pro surfer Michel Bourez was DW foiling in Tahiti and a 3-4 meter hammerhead bit his Signature stab clean off. He used the board and foil to keep the shark away until a boat came to scoop him.

Recall there was a fatality in New Caledonia. Guy was on a DW, maybe sup foil.
Someone at Cabarita or Kingscliff ended up with shark tooth in foil.
Personally, no shark stuff, but had two rays follow my foil and sharks eat rays. So maybe the foil looks like a ray.
