You already know the angle you want: the shot that looks back down the lines, with your kite parked up in the corner and spray coming off the rail.

Getting it without a filmer on the beach means carrying the camera yourself, and the shoulder is the spot that works.

The head and helmet move too much. A helmet mount swings with every glance and turns a clean run into a seasick blur.

The shoulder is calmer than the head and higher than the chest, so a short boom off it frames both you and the kite.

Building the mount

A rigid boom is the whole trick. Any flex in the arm gets amplified at the camera end, so the clip wobbles even when your riding is smooth.

Riders have built these for years from offcuts of fibreglass, alloy tube or even a shaped kitchen chopping board, bolted to a harness or a backpack strap.

Keep the boom short, roughly 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16 in), and brace it against your back so it cannot twist sideways when you load up the kite.

Mount the camera facing back toward your head, tilted down a few degrees, so the lens catches your body, the board and the water rather than empty sky.

Aiming and settings

Point it at yourself, not the horizon. The interesting part of the shot is you and the kite working together, so the rider should sit in the lower third of the frame.

Use the widest field of view the camera offers, since a wide lens hides small vibrations and keeps the kite in shot even when it drifts.

Shoot at a high frame rate if you can, because 60 frames a second or more lets you slow the footage down and smooths out the ride in the edit.

Turn on any built-in stabilisation, and clean the lens port before every session, as salt haze ruins more clips than shake ever will.

Reading the light and water

Flat, well-lit conditions film best. Choppy water reads as noise on a small sensor, while glassy water and side light show off spray and your wake.

Shoot with the sun behind you or to the side, so your face and sail are lit rather than thrown into silhouette against a bright sky.

Steady wind matters as much as light, so check the wind forecast and pick a session where you can ride relaxed and let the camera do its job.

When the footage comes back wrong

Empty frames mean the boom moved. If half your clips show only sky or water, the arm has rotated, so add a second fixing point and re-check the aim on the beach.

Constant wobble usually means the boom is too long or too soft, so shorten it or brace it harder against your back.

Washed-out, hazy clips point to a dirty or salted lens, so rinse the housing in fresh water and dry the port between runs.
