Have you taken one for a demo?

There are plenty of comparison reviews to be found. Basically from what I've read, the XR is better suited for beginners than the Edge. But there's a lot more to it than that of course.

The North Orbit, Duotone Rebel and maybe Cabrinha Switchblade should also be in your sights. All 5 strut kites that are good for big air boosting. All have their unique charactaristics and pro's & con's.

Hi Steve,

If you live a in major city It's easy enough to demo kites from local shops these days and make up your own mind.

Have you considered the Airush Lift ? We have a 7m, 9m, and 12m Lift V1's and Lift V2's available for demo any day in Perth. These kites are best flown in high winds so might be a while before we get such conditions. Send me a PM if you wish to organize a demo

thanks

Ozone Edge all the way mate. V11 just released. Fast, light, nimble and should be able to carry your weight up high with ease. There are certainly some guys doing impressive big air on XRs around here. But would not disregard the Edge either ;-)

I have flown XR's for the last 2-3 years and have a 10m XR7 (which I am selling). I am over 100kg and have flown it between 22kn and 42kn. XR's best traits IMO are jumping ability pure height and wind range - particularly at top end. Low end not so much fun for boosting (obviously) but they are OK for a 5 strut. Have not flown and edge, but would say the XR's have the current Edges on height and are a bit faster turning, based on what I have seen of others. The new Edge looks pretty good, however I would wait and see what mortals can do on them, not just Jamie Overbeek jumping 35m in 60kn and megalooping it.

If you are thinking of progressing to loops, XR is not the kite to learn on, Orbit or Rise are the best/safest big air kites for loops out there currently in my opinion.

Judging by this **** season I should be looking at a foil board rather than a xr

The kites are very similar in most areas in my view.

Feel is similar, wind range is similar (although low end is better w Edge), power is similar.
Having said that, the Edge is slightly faster / more responsive, and jumps slightly higher (in most normal conditions, but when fully powered ie strong wind the difference is less. Although the Edge still jumps a bit higher (id say around 10% higher).

The above is after about 15 sessions or so each on the 8m and 10m XR7 (after having owned the same sizes Edge V10 for about 2 years), with the WOO to support my findings...

So, if jumping high is your focus and you don't live in WA, then I'd say go Edge.

However if you live somewhere with (very) strong and gusty, winds on a regular basis, then I'd say go XR7, as it is more rigid/sturdy (and hence handles gusts better).

Any you fairys tried unhooking yet? I hear its a must have these days. Learn to control boardspeed and match that power with the kite so you are takeing the excess on your arms. You know like an actual understanding of what kitesurfing is. Nothing fancy just competentcy

Once you got them by the moontan flip youll have em bakeing

Yep, that's what I thought as well when I decided to swap the Edges for the XR7...
Would be interesting to see what would happen if those top WOO leaderboard peeps swapped their XR7s for the Edge, especially Edge v11....

Yeh I hear you, that's why I'm keeping my v9 just in case
i actually preferred the v9 to the v10 edges, and heard the v11s would be more like the v9 a bit more refined tho so wanted to try something different. But who knows, makes life fun.

So you've had a change of mind since you wrote this?

"I found the v10 very nice indeed. Very small changes. Tiny bit smoother, tiny bit faster, still an excellent booster. I believe it loops better now." - 25 Jan 2020

Not picking on you, just genuinely interested... so reading through the archives.

I'm trying to decide on an 8m boosting machine either Edge v11 vs xr7. I already have an Ozone bar and not a Core bar, so $1k less is swaying my decision towards Edge. Or I could get a second hand v9 and run that into the ground until I can afford to replace it all in a couple of years.

Ive found the V9 has considerably better bottom end. The V9 9 meter has about the same bottom end as the V10 11 meter

My two cents worth as far as the jumping Is you can make any kite jump. The kind of wind you're in makes more of a difference than the kite in my experience. Rode naish parks when I started before the woo days and got them up there for a beginner, then rode north/duo vegas for 8 years trying to do the flicky spinny stuff, pb on the 9m vegas 19.3m. Got a 9m xr7 this summer with a Pb 20.2m. Both done in the upper 30s wind range. 7m Duotone neo in 35kn 18m. 7m vegas 45kn winter storm off the flat/chop 17m.

p.s im moving overseas in a few weeks if you want a one summer old 9m XR7 with sensor3 bar

Anyone know the best setting on the kite for jumping on the xr7? I'm presuming it's the factory setting but wing tip to fast turning?
cheers

Do yourself a favor and try all the settings to see what they do - Nek minute you'll be educated.
The amount of people that are too scared to move things 1 cm is hilarious
If that fails - just stick it on fast, to catch you before going Splat pulling your coolest trick, in front of a beach walker with a camera

Hey Ste,

It's personal preference. Front bridle setting changes bar pressure mostly, and wing tip changes turning pressure. Like STW said, it's only 1cm or so, so it's not going to break the kite and it only takes seconds to change so why not experiment?

I'm 90kgs wet. I fly a 10 from 25-45 knots all my xrs loop mint I've only been dropped twice out of 00000s of loops needs to be set right. I've seen the flying Scott's man on his 13 and was convinced mine is ordered up for summer. I believe the upwind on the edge felt better by a lot but that was swapping from my 10m xr6 to a 9m of a mates. On a winter pumper like 22m jumps on woo etc.
