Hi
If you had to pick the best year round kitesurf spot on the sunny coast for general twin tips and waveboards, i.e. best place to live and kite the most and then depending on wind direction/strength travel on other days up and down coast, where would you choose?
No such thing as "year round spot" in SEQ....
September through to April = SEQ
May through to August = FNQ (no waves)
Which also means, you get summer all year round
yeah true thanks. Do you think if you need to live in SE QLD that Caloundra offers the best summer kiting if you didnt want to travel too much?
In Caloundra, the river mouth (Happy Valley) works on SE during outgoing tide, Golden Beach (5 minutes away) works on SE incoming tide or NE outgoing tide. in Noosa, river mouth works on NE outgoing tide or Lake Weyba (15 minutes away) works on SE and is non tidal. Maroochydore you have Cotton Tree river mouth which works in NE outgoing tide or out the front in the waves on a SE. Most of the above are pretty flat water but there are two popular downwinders options: Peregian to Sunshine Beach north of Maroochydore or Moffatt Beach to S-Bend in Kawana if you're south of Maroochydore. Both downwinder options can be reversed depending if the winds are Northerly or Southerly.
Sunny Coast is pretty spoilt for choice no matter where you live.
Also we have a good crew of keen foil kiters who typically score 2-4 sessions per week right through winter - minus the odd bad week or two that happens here or there. So if you progress in that direction there's no need to go thousands of kms to FNQ. We tend to hit Mooloolaba on a NW to NE, Cotton tree or Happy valley in a SE, Golden Beach for flat water/progression (if the tide's not running out too hard), Buddina Beach if the surf's not too gnarly for an ocean session, or lake Weyba if everything else is out.
